Chapter Meeting March 8, 2023: Leadership in the Documentation Space

Speaker: Victoria Bortle

About the program

Join us for a discussion of leadership in the documentation space. Leadership can take on many forms – direct managerial positions, building and scaling documentation teams, and peer-to-peer mentoring and collaboration, to name a few. To start, we’ll discuss personal experiences with leadership and strategies for managing and building documentation teams. Then, we’ll open discussion to the group to share resources, tips, and experiences and how we can all show up as leaders in the workplace. We hope you’ll join us for a hearty discussion!

About the speaker

Victoria Bortle works remotely at a Silicon Valley fintech company as a documentation manager. She has nearly twenty years of editorial experience, including persuasive SEO copywriting, UX design, video tutorial production, customer-facing documentation, and content strategy. She holds a B.A. in History from Smith College with additional coursework at the University of California, Riverside and the University of California, Berkeley.

Chapter Meeting January 11, 2023: A Technical Writer’s Introduction to OpenAPI

Speaker: Robert Delwood

About the program

“A Technical Writer’s Introduction to OpenAPI” is designed to give technical writers a foundational understanding of OpenAPI, sometimes known as Swagger. OpenAPI is a widely-used specification for building APIs, and it can be a valuable tool for technical writers to understand in order to document and communicate effectively about APIs. In this talk, you will learn the basics of OpenAPI, including how to write OpenAPI descriptions and generate documentation. By the end, you will have the knowledge and skills necessary to use OpenAPI to document APIs in a clear and concise manner. Let’s get started!

About the speaker

Robert Delwood is a programmer, writer, and programmer-writer in Chicago’s legal community and formerly with NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. He’s been writing API documentation since the early days of Microsoft Windows. He sees the exponential growth of the REST API economy. He invites everyone to become an API documentation writer, and is willing to help them to get there.

December 14, 2022 – San Francisco STC Holiday Party – In Person

Free Food, Free Books, and Live Entertainment

About the program

Instead of having a December guest speaker via Zoom, we will be hosting an in-person holiday party!

The highlight of the evening will be our creative sharing time. This can take any form: A short story or poem you’ve written, a piece of art, a short video you made, or a craft project, such as a quilt or a sweater. Or you might play some music or rap, or sing a song. We hope you’ll share your talents and passion with us as we come together to celebrate the season! Sharing is completely optional.

Another tradition of our holiday parties is the book exchange. It’s optional, but if you want to participate, bring a new or gently used book, wrapped and unidentified. We’ll have a few extras if you forget but still want to participate.

Note: We’ve reserved a room with a finite capacity. We’ll try to accommodate everyone who shows up, but it would help if you would let us know you’re coming and let us know if you’re bringing guests. Send email to [email protected] to let us know your plans.

If you’d like a ride, or if you’re driving, please send an email to [email protected], and we’ll try to introduce drivers and riders. If you’re driving, please tell us when and from where you’re leaving and how many passengers you can take.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages are on us!

There will be no admission charge for this meeting.

See you there!

Chapter Meeting October 12, 2022 – Open Discussion

About the program

We have not scheduled a presentation for this meeting. We will talk about whatever technical communication topics the people who attend wish to discuss.

A roomful of technical communicators is seldom at a loss for ideas or opinions, and that goes for a Zoom-roomful as well. So join us for a lively and wide-ranging exploration.

Suggested topics for discussion:

  • Is technical communication still what we do? What are the boundaries?
  • What should we be learning to stay relevant?
  • Is it better to be an employee or a contractor these days?
  • Whatever topics you bring to the meeting.

We look forward to seeing you there.
