His degrees are in United States History and Theater Arts, and his fields of focus are nineteenth and twentieth-century U.S and European cultural and intellectual history; oral history theory and methodology; memory, personal narrative, and representations of identity. He has also been Professor of History at the University of Michigan and Director of its program in American Culture, as well as Associate Director and Principal Editor of the Oral History Program at the University of California at Los Angeles. Dr. Smith has authored and edited books with titles ranging from Utopia and Dissent: Art, Poetry and Politics in California to The Feminist as Thinker: The Intellectual Contributions of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, as well as numerous essays published in the U.S. and overseas. He has served as advisor on oral history methodology for a number of major projects, and won awards for research and scholarship in oral history, and filled leadership positions in the Oral History Association since 1986.
When invited to speak to us, Dr. Smith was asked to tell us about "ROHO" (the Regional Office of Oral History at UC) including what is done there, how it is done and anything and everything about its processes of research and information organization. He replied that he would speak about his experience with indexes and oral history and what some of his concerns on that subject are. Several of his staff advised that he is a superb speaker and very enthusiastic about his work, so it promises to be an interesting, entertaining and highly educational workshop.
